Many of Bruegel's paintings show dramatic events taking place without anyone else much noticing. In this painting Icarus has already fallen victim to his own hubris and will soon die a watery death. The peasants tending their fields and flocks don't even notice his death plunge, their interest remains with the quotidian present.
